Wolf Creek is 100% open

Posted by frontrangeriffraff on December 2, 2008

Ya gotta love Wolf Creek. They are 100% open. While most other Colorado ski areas keep you off any trail that isn’t mostly covered, Wolf Creek lets you decide where you want to ride. Their only disclaimer? “Early season conditions persist with some obstacles.” I can deal with that.

If you’re tired of avoiding kooks at the Big Ski Co. resorts with their limited early-season terrain, then grab your rock sticks or board and head down to Wolfy and get some. Check out a calendar of their Local Appreciation Days with $31 lift tickets (no ID required, woot!) here.

Zach Hooper and friends documented a Wolf Creek trip last month, with a cat ride and snowboarding with Wolf Creek owner/president/manager/snowboarder/all-around-cool-guy Davey Pitcher:

And the best Colorado ski/snowboard/snow report is?

Posted by frontrangeriffraff on November 17, 2008

Front Range riffraff wanting to see snow conditions for all of Colorado used to have a great resource at Colorado Ski Country USA. Their snow report previously listed almost every ski area in the state, until Vail Resorts pulled out of the group earlier this year. Now their snow report does not include Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, Keystone or Vail. What’s a ski bum to do?

Well, there are many other sites to choose from. The Denver Post Colorado Ski Report is one of the best snow reports. Why? For starters, it lists snow totals for 24, 48 and 72 hours. Most other snow reports only give you 24- and 48-hour numbers. In addition, total acres open is listed instead of just number of lifts or percent of terrain. That’s a good thing to know early season, as total acres open is often the best indicator of who’s getting/making the most snow. You also get vertical drop. No RSS feed, though. Score: 8 woots! (Out of a possible 10.)

Denver Post Colorado Ski Report

The Rocky Mountain News Colorado Snow Report has less useful information. It’s more of a quick summary, although it does give you the window ticket price. (As if. Friends don’t let friends pay full window price.) And you do get opening/closing dates, which is helpful for planning. As with the Post, no RSS feed. Silly newspapers. Score: 6 woots!

Rocky Mountain News Colorado Snow Report

OnTheSnow.com lists 24- and 48-hour snow, base depth and weather. You have to click on each resort if you want more than the basics. They provide the Denver Post’s info, so it’s pretty much the same data once you click on each resort, but in a more drawn out, clicky fashion. RSS is also an option, which is a good thing. Score: 6 woots!

OnTheSnow.com Colorado Ski Report

And then there’s the Colorado Ski Country USA “Today’s Snow Conditions flown in by… Frontier.” You get the percentage of beginner, intermediate and expert terrain open, which could be useful. There’s not much love for KABVBC passholders, but it does include Arapahoe Basin. Info is “Updated twice a day by the resorts themselves.” They offer good RSS and email options, too, although they do their best to hide the RSS feed. Oh, and you can view it in metric measurements, which is cool for your Euro friends. And, as previously mentioned, there’s no sight of Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, Keystone or Vail. Score: 5 woots!

Anywoo, those are the reports I found. Please leave a comment if you know of any other good online reports.

Storm nails Telluride

Posted by frontrangeriffraff on November 12, 2008

While you were busy watching Obama wallop McCain last week, a storm hit the southwest Colorado mountains and walloped Telluride Ski Resort with three feet of snow in 24 hours in Revelation Bowl.

In related news, I’m moving to Telluride.

But seriously, let’s hope there’s much more of that sweet storm action all season. Telluride opens on November 27 if you want to head down now to camp out in the lift line.

Check the white goodness from last week:

Copper has announced planned terrain openings for this weekend. Press release below:

Copper Mountain is pleased to open one week ahead of its scheduled opening date – welcoming skiers and riders tomorrow Friday, Nov. 7.  Guests will enjoy terrain off the American Eagle lift as well as Opening Weekend specials throughout the Village at Copper.

On Friday, Nov. 7, Copper will open the intermediate Main Vein trail and the American Eagle lift, as well as the Eagle Jib Park with 10 box and rail features.  In addition, for those still perfecting their skiing and riding, Easy Rider lift and the enclosed learning area will also open.

For Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 8 and 9, Copper will also open the Excelerator lift servicing intermediate terrain on Ptarmigan trail.

All lifts will open at 9 a.m., seven days a week until Dec. 19, to give Copper’s on-hill teams more time to prepare the snow for the day ahead. Race training will take place from 6 – 9 a.m. daily on Main Vein trail.

Season Passes are available for the 08/09 Winter season including the Rocky Mountain Super Pass Plus.  New this season, Copper is offering a Woodward at Copper season pass upgrade, as well as the traditional Rocky Mountain Super Pass, Copper Season passes, Transfour Cards and Four Passes.  www.passwagon.com.

Copper Savers opening weekend lodging package, starting from $99 per night for a hotel room, is the best way to enjoy Opening Weekend and get out on the snow, without having to fight traffic or the weather.  Please call your Copper Vacation Specialists at 866-534-7443 to book your opening weekend lodging package.  This package is valid Nov. 7 – 8 only, is based on availability, and is not valid for group or conference stays.  Tax, surcharge and booking fee are not included.  Other restrictions may apply.

Big Friday is almost here, now with fresh snow!

It’s snowing in the high country, and that’s good news for Big Friday: Breckenridge, Copper Mountain, Keystone, and Wolf Creek Ski Area are set to open on Friday, Nov. 7, 2008.

My advice? Take Friday off and hit up opening day. It should be less crowded than the weekend, and the snow will be a little fresher. And it beats working.

No on 36, but Friday Night Lights scheduled at Keystone

Posted by frontrangeriffraff on October 20, 2008

Chad Robinson of team Hometown Heroes hangs out at the base area at midnight during the 36 Hours of Keystone on Friday November 30, 2007.

Chad Robinson of team Hometown Heroes hangs out at the base area at midnight during the 36 Hours of Keystone on Friday November 30, 2007.

I found out today that the former 36 Hours of Keystone event is done. Finished, kaput, stick-a-fork in it done.

Since security was patting-down participants for contraband booze last year, it sounds like the event was getting a little too out of hand. Alcohol + gravity + night skiing + more alcohol = potential trouble.

But, Keystone is planning a new FREE concert series in place of the forlorn 36. The Friday Night Lights Concert Series will take place in the Hunki Dori parking lot next to the new River Run Gondola:

November 21st – Clap Your Hands Say Yeah
November 28th – DeVotchKa
December 5th – Girl Talk

There will be night skiing and riding each night. I’m sure many of the former 36 Hours peeps will be attracted to this new series like cougars to a fireman, so it should be fun. Did I mention it’s free? And, by the way, it’s free.

And, since it’s early season, the usual early season lodging deals can be found. The Inn at Keystone is a favorite of mine, with sweet rooftop hot tubs. Head to Keystone’s swanky Flashy webzsite for more info: www.keystonefnl.com
